Welcome

Sevenoaks & Tonbridge Conservation Volunteers

Sunday 15th July 2012. Summer picnic at Bough Beech

STCV is a group (affiliated to the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) interested in restoring wildlife habitats in north-west Kent. Our aim is to assist local conservation organisations by providing teams of volunteers to carry out tasks on their reserves or projects. This gives us the opportunity to do a wide variety of different types of work at a variety of sites. We are often privileged to work on nature reserves where there is limited public access and to see nature in the company of expert wardens and other enthusiasts.

Where do we do it? We work in the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge area venturing north to Kemsing, south to Tudeley, west to Cowden and east to Addington. An exception is a visit to Ashdown forest in the summer to join other groups for pond digging and bracken clearance.

What do we do? Simply put we do tasks for conservation projects. They have the work we have the labour! During the winter we carry out woodland management, clearing rides and paths, cutting scrub - often with a fire on cold days. Spring time has hedging, fencing and planting. Summer activities include pond digging and clearing, planting and hedge maintenance. Reports of some of our recent outings can be found on our web site:here

Why do we do it? There are probably as many reasons as there are volunteers. Some enjoy the day outdoors, some the physical work after a week in the office, and some the good company. The common theme is an enjoyment of the natural world and a feeling of contributing something back to society.
